Swap beef or chicken for pulses

Pulses, which include dried legumes like beans, lentils, chickpeas and split peas, are fabulous sources of protein. Since red meat is limited on this diet, swap beef or chicken for pulses, says Martha Clare Morris, director of nutrition and nutritional epidemiology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, who created the MIND diet. "Instead of a taco with ground beef, have a taco with beans. Beans are an excellent source of B vitamins and a low-fat, high-protein alternative to red meat," she says.
