I Finally Found a Weekly Workout Routine That Works For Me—Here's What It Is
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: Lifting at the Gym I started going to the gym religiously in 2021, and it has been the best thing for my mental wellness, physical fitness, and overall contentment with life. I find so much joy in lifting because feeling strong and capable simply makes me feel like a badass. (Not to mention, I've experienced the most physical changes in my body from lifting, so women, don't be afraid to lift heavy!) I lift three times a week, usually doing lower body twice and upper body once (Yes, I am trying to get a butt as good as Hot Girl Meg, and what about it?).
Tuesday: Rest For a very long time, I thought that the key to having a good workout routine was working out every single day. While I would sometimes give myself a Sunday "rest" day to go to a yoga class (girl, yoga is not rest), I was otherwise working out every single day. That was nice… for a little. Then, I started getting burnt out, and my body wasn't responding the same way I wanted it to. I started incorporating rest days once a week, and Tuesday makes the most sense with my schedule. Instead of taking an hour for working out, I have my therapy appointments this day, which is basically a workout for my brain.
Thursday: Obé Dance Cardio On Thursday, I kick my workout into high gear (literally, usually) with a dance workout from Obé. I am obsessed with Obé's dance classes because they're easy, fun, and the instructors always have good music. I burn a ton of calories in less than 30 minutes, and I'm on with my day (which usually ends in a happy hour somewhere because, hello, Friday eve!).
Saturday: Walk or Cardio at the Gym
If it's nice weather, I love to take a long walk to start my Saturday. If I have plans with my friends, I'll walk there instead of take the bus. On the days where Chicago's weather fails me, I'll do 12-3-30 at the gym, which always gets my heart rate up and makes me feel accomplished AF when I leave.
Sunday: Obé Pilates or Yoga
I live for my Sunday workouts. For a lot of people, Sunday is a day of rest and relaxation. For me, it's the day I feel the most motivated to do anything and everything to set myself up for a good week, including getting a good workout in. My workout of choice on this day is always something low intensity with high impact, like Obé's yoga or pilates classes. The feeling of waking up on Monday morning with sore abs is one that I won't ever get over, and I love how relaxed and centered I feel going into the week after a good stretch sesh in a yoga class.
Once A Month: In-Person Classes
Whenever I can, I'll treat myself to an in-person class. For starters, I am way more motivated when I'm surrounded by a bunch of fit queens pushing me to not stop whenever I feel like it. But it's also a really great activity to do with coworkers after work or friends on the weekends. It's a simple way to get me out of the house or my comfort zone for my workouts, especially after not being able to do them for a long time. I love being able to work out at home, but when I get to a class, I never regret it.
