As I write this I'm getting ready to move to a new city. Yep, I'm moving during a pandemic — a double feature event the universe created to make me reevaluate all I've ever known about my coping skills. It's funny, though: Whenever I talk about how stressed I am, people don't mention the pandemic. Instead, they say, "I heard moving is more stressful than divorce or death." And as someone with deep suicidal ideation... that f*cking scans. Because September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, Greatist is kicking off a series dedicated to destigmatizing the less-talked-about emotions. We've just published nuanced stories on understanding suicidal ideation, inspecting shame, releasing anger, and confronting jealousy. We also have an infographic covering where emotions tend to live in your body and a breakdown of two perspectives that might empower you to find the right way of coping. And when September ends (*cue Green Day*), we hope to continue our mental health content with this goal in mind: to help you kick off that vulnerable but trust-building conversation you need. It could simply start like this: "Hey, I don't really have the brain waves to explain what I'm going through right now without feeling like a burden. But this article explains it pretty well." — Christal Yuen, Senior Editor |
