You might have seen black and white photos posted to Instagram over the past week or so with the hashtag #challengeaccepted. What is the challenge all about? According to The New York Times, variants of this challenge have existed on Instagram since 2016. The resurgence of the challenge may have roots in women from Turkey sharing black and white images of themselves to raise awareness about femicide.
Since the challenge debuted, there's been criticism levied at posting without understanding or recognizing the origins of the challenge. There's also been push back against the backlash, noting that judgment and criticism for posting something meant to uplift women supporting women is the last thing we need right now.
Be informed. There's nothing wrong with posting a black and white selfie, just as there isn't anything wrong with not posting one. Just be sure to do your research and stay informed when participating in social media challenges. Ask yourself: Where did this challenge originate? What was the original intent? Who created it? Put in the time to fully understand so you can feel good about making an informed decision, whether that means you want to post or you'll abstain.
