| No Images? Click here THE MORE YOU KNOWSmelling junk food may actually make you want it lessYou know how it sometimes seems impossible to resist a carton of piping hot, golden French fries or a perfectly crispy pizza? Turns out, it's easier if you simply take a deep breath and smell the junk food. But not just a quick whiff Inhaling the scent of indulgent foods for less than 30 seconds will likely make you crave them more, according to a new study in the Journal of Marketing Research. But once you bypass the two-minute mark, those unhealthy options become much less desirable. Believe it or not, that's because your brain is just as easily satisfied by the "ambient food scents" of decadent foods as it is by your actually digging in. Need proof? In the study, participants exposed to the (sweet, sweet) smell of cookies for 30 seconds wanted the treats. (Duh.) But those who smelled them for longer than two minutes passed on the cookie (!) and picked strawberries instead. The same results occurred when the test was repeated with the scent of pizza and apples. Now whether you run into the nearest McDonald's or Cinnabon to fully test the theory is up to you. Try thisNext time you're craving something sweet, try a protein-packed snack like almonds and string cheese or a Greek yogurt parfait. The protein will help you feel full and satiated, plus boost your mood. That's more than we can say for that handful of chocolate chips.
